Arachne: Collaborative Project

The Arachne: Collaborative Project consisted of young artists, voluntarily working as a collaborative, to create an exhibition based off of the Greek/Roman Mythology of Arachne. This project brought together different artists to engage with sculpture and painting in different ways, allowing those involved to expand their individual creative practices. Delving deep into the story, we analysed each piece of the article, expressing our perspectives and interpretations of the myth in a modern light. This project allowed me to expand my practise; learning new skills through networking, learning to weave, work collaboratively and accept change. Many qualities I carry in my practise today.

The Arachne Mythology:

The Arachne myth is considered an origin story in Greek Mythology. It not only explains the existence of arachnids but also serves as a cautionary tale about comparing oneself and abilities to the gods. The myth of Arachne details the story of a maiden who becomes renowned for her weaving abilities. In doing so, she attracts the unwelcome attention of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war, who is also associated with weaving. Athena and Arachne take part in a battle of looms, and depending on the version, Arachne either wins or loses. As either a punishment or a gift, she is transformed into a spider by Athena.

The Progression of the piece, mirrors the progression of change and acceptance within myself and my practise.
